Windows Wallpaper Free

Windows Wallpaper Free Biography
The images on this page are photographs I've taken and use as Windows wallpaper.  You are welcome to download these photographs for personal use.

There are low and high resolution images on this page.  Low resolution images are fun to use for wallpaper because if you tell Windows to stretch them you'll get an abstract effect.  This can be very dramatic if you use a small thumbnail-size image.

How a PC handles the differences in resolution and aspect ratio between an image and monitor varies with the version of Windows.  Play with your display settings to see how various size images appear under the three available options - stretch, center and tile.  To alter these settings in Windows XP, point your mouse to an open area of your desktop.  Right-click the mouse, choose Properties from the pop-up menu and select the Desktop tab.  You should see a drop-down box labeled position.  This is where you can choose one of the three options.  Display settings can be accessed in a similar manner in most versions of Windows.

Center yields a normal looking image if image resolution is less-than or equal to that of the monitor.  Center will crop a larger image.  This can be very cool.  A favorite of mine.

Stretch is fun too.  If the image resolution is less than your monitor's, Windows will stretch the image to fit.  If image resolution is equal to or greater than your monitor's, the image should appear normal.  An exception to this occurs if the aspect ratio of the image and monitor aren't the same, in which case there will be some distortion (stretching).

Tile creates a repeating pattern that looks best with thumbnail-size images.  It's a wild effect, but I drink too much coffee to handle it.
Tip:  If you have a newer laptop or monitor with a wide-screen display choose 1024x768 pixel resolution and tell the display to center the image, unless of course you want to play around with stretch.
New...  On the next page you'll find wide format 1280 x 800 pixel images.  These wide format photographs have also been cropped to fit 1024x768 and 800x600 resolution monitors.

How to Download an Image
To use one of these photographs for wallpaper, click a thumbnail.  A larger version of the image will load in a new browser window.  Point to this image with your mouse, right click, and select Set as Wallpaper from the pop-up menu.  The menu might also say Set as Background or Set as Desktop Background.  Same thing.  It all depends...  It doesn't matter if the image is too large for the browser window.  Right click anywhere on the image once it has loaded.

If you prefer to copy the image to your PC first and then create your wallpaper, select Save Picture As from the right-click menu instead of Set as Wallpaper.  This allows you to create a collection of images that you can use whenever you like.

Low Resolution Images
Low resolution images will have an abstract appearance when stretched to fit a high-resolution monitor.  These photos were taken with an early low-resolution digital camera.
